Be Alarmed - It Could Save Your Life!

New fire code regulations - Carbon Monoxide is often called the “silent Killer”.  A properly installed and maintained alarm can save lives. What Is Carbon Monoxide? Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odourless, colourless gas. You cannot see it or smell it. It is produced when fuels such as natural gas, propane, gasoline, wood, oil, or coal do not burn completely. Dangerous levels of Carbon Monoxide can come from: • Gas furnaces, fireplaces, and water heaters • Gas stoves and ovens • Vehicles or generators running in an attached garage • Fuel-burning appliances that are not properly vented (effective January 1, 2026) If your home has a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace, or an attached garage, you are required to have working carbon monoxide alarms installed.  Installing a Carbon Monoxide Alarm Under Ontario Fire Code Regulation 213/07, Carbon Monoxide alarms must meet one of these standards: • CSA 6.19 – Residential Carbon Monoxide Alarming Devices • UL 2034 – Single and Multiple Station Carbon Monoxide Alarms When buying an alarm, check the packaging to confirm it meets one of these standards. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to ensure proper installation. For full details on placement requirements, visit the Province of Ontario website for current guidance Carbon Monoxide Safety Tips • Never let your vehicle idle in the garage. Move it outside immediately after starting. • Keep snow clear from exhaust pipes, dryer vents, and appliance air intakes. • Use generators and gas-powered equipment outdoors only, away from windows and doors. • Book a yearly inspection for your furnace, fireplace, chimney, stove, dryer, and other fuel-burning appliances. • Never use ovens, ranges, or dryers to heat your home. • Never use a BBQ or camping equipment indoors unless it is approved for enclosed spaces. Carbon monoxide is often called the “silent killer.” A properly installed and maintained alarm can save lives. If you have questions about how these changes may affect your home, rental property, or upcoming sale, I’m always happy to help.
