• The life expectancy of asphalt shingles on the roof is determined by the following. The slope of the roof. Shingles last longer on steeper sloped roofs. The colour of the roof. Lighter coloured roofs last longer than a darker coloured roof. Exposure to the sun. North facing shingles last longer than south facing shingles. Steep slope, light colour, east-west facing roofs can last 25 years or more and a low slope dark-colour south facing roof may fall within 15 years.
• Dripping faucets - A faucet that drips at a rate of one drip per second for a month will waste over 200 gallons of water.
• Silencing noisy floorboards? Squirt powdered or liquid graphite between boards, or dust cracks with talcum powder.
• Club soda will shine up stainless steel sinks in a jiffy.
• If cats are digging in your garden, throw some mothballs in the garden, cats hate the smell.
• Spray soapsuds around your plants to keep most insects away.
• To clean the mineral deposits in a toilet bowl, apply shampoo or dish detergent to a pumice stone and scrub the stains away.
• Washing windows - mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water. This solution won't leave any streaks on the glass.
• Remove wine stains - When red wine is spilled, blot up as much as possible & then immediately cover the wine with salt. Later rinse the article of clothing with cold water or club soda. Launder as usual.
• Give your carpet a new lease on life. Sprinkle some salt on it right before you vacuum.
• Candles will last a lot longer if placed in the freezer for at least 3 hours prior to burning.
• Wrap celery in aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator, it will keep for weeks.
• For icy door steps in freezing temperatures, get warm water and put 'Dawn' dishwashing liquid in it. Pour it all over the steps. They won't refreeze.
